Thursday Night Satsang: Kirtan, Love, and Meeting the Divine

TLDR: In this Thursday Night Satsang recorded in the Bahamas, the teacher shares stories about encountering authentic spiritual presence, explains the deeper meanings of sacred chants including Har Har Mahadev and a Devi puja mantra, and teaches that meditation at its essence is losing yourself in love—not technique. The session weaves together kirtan (call-and-response chanting), storytelling about encounters with the guru Maharaji, and practical guidance on how to engage with Sanskrit practice while remaining accessible to Western practitioners.

What Does It Mean to Meditate Like Christ?

One of the central teachings in this satsang comes from a story about a new visitor to Maharaji's temple. When the visitor asked how to meditate, Maharaji initially sent him away, but then called back: "Meditate like Christ." Later, when pressed for clarification, Maharaji didn't offer a technique—instead, he closed his eyes and sat in complete stillness. Two tears rolled down his cheeks. When he opened his eyes, he said simply: "He lost himself in love."

This teaching cuts to the heart of what meditation actually is. It's not about mastering a syllable count, holding a posture, or performing complex visualizations. The teacher emphasizes that many seekers expect something exotic or difficult—"some ten billion syllable mantra you had to do standing on one toe on the ice for ten thousand years"—but the real work is far more fundamental and far more accessible: learning to lose yourself in love.

The teacher went to India to verify whether this love was real, and his conclusion is unambiguous: it is real, and it is available to anyone and everyone, all the time. This is what we actually want, beneath all other desires.

The Story of Encountering the Baba in the Field of Sacred Fires

Another powerful story describes a journey with a 163-year-old Baba (spiritual elder) to a gathering in a large field. When their car arrived, the assembled sadhus—thousands of them—recognized the Baba's presence and stood up, singing Har Har Mahadev in unison. The teacher describes this moment as "from outer space" and "unbelievable."

What struck him was the contrast between how he had been viewing this elder—as a "nice little worldly guy, you know, sat around in a beach chair with a schmata on his head"—and the reverence the assembled spiritual practitioners showed. This moment revealed something he had not fully grasped: the presence and power of an authentic spiritual being, and the recognition that comes when sincere practitioners gather.

What Is Har Har Mahadev and Why Does It Matter?

The chant Har Har Mahadev addresses a particular form of Shiva—the lord of the universe as he resides on the banks of the Ganga in Kashi (Benares). This is not abstract theology. In India, pilgrims travel to Kashi as they near death because of a specific belief: that Shiva whispers the name of Rama in your ear at the moment of death. Many also travel to Brindavan (Krishna's birthplace) with the same intention—to be present in a sacred place when they pass.

When thousands of sadhus sing this chant together, they are not merely reciting words. They are invoking the presence and blessing of Shiva in his most sacred form, in the place most associated with liberation at death. The teacher's presence at this event, and his experience of the song rising from the assembled multitude, was an encounter with spiritual power made audible.

The Devi Puja Mantra: Asking for Form, Victory, and Purification

The teacher teaches another chant from the Devi puja (worship of the Divine Mother). This mantra has four lines that repeat, each with a specific intention. The teacher breaks down the Sanskrit meanings:

  • Rupam means form. When we ask for the goddess's form, we are essentially asking to become one with her, to take on her qualities and consciousness.
  • Jam Jam refers to victory, success, and material provision. The teacher notes that in India, people are not shy about asking for what they need—television, cars, whatever provides security and comfort. These requests come from a place of real need, not greed.
  • The third request is to remove negativity and obstacles. "Take away all the negativity in my life. Remove everything that's in my way."

For Western practitioners unfamiliar with Sanskrit, the teacher offers the option to sing in another language while maintaining the same intention. The form of the prayer matters less than the sincerity and clarity of what you are asking for and why.

Why Kirtan Is Not Passive Consumption

Throughout the satsang, the teacher leads call-and-response singing. Kirtan is not a performance to watch passively. It is a practice—a deliberate engagement of voice, breath, heart, and attention. When you sing the divine names, you are not pretending to feel something you don't feel. You are creating the conditions for genuine feeling to emerge. The repetition, the call-and-response structure, and the collective participation of many voices together create a field in which transformation becomes possible.

The teacher also addresses a specific pushback he receives: people who object to him singing certain songs, particularly "Jesus on Me" (where he references his own Jewish background). His response is dry humor: "I can't believe in this day and age there are still people who can't stand to see a Jewish kid that made good." The point is that genuine spirituality transcends sectarian boundaries. Jesus, Krishna, Ram—these are all names of the divine, and a sincere seeker may call upon all of them.

The Nature of Spiritual Authority and Presence

One theme woven throughout is the question of how you recognize authentic spiritual authority. The new visitor to Maharaji didn't know what to expect. Maharaji's response—first dismissive, then cryptic—was not designed to comfort. Instead, it was designed to cut through the visitor's own ideas about what spirituality should be. Only later, when Maharaji demonstrated through his own stillness and tears what "losing yourself in love" actually looks like, did the teaching land.

This is radically different from much contemporary spiritual marketing, which promises ease and comfort. Authentic teaching sometimes confuses you first. It asks you to sit with paradox. And then, gradually, the paradox resolves into clarity.

Where to Go From Here

If you resonate with these teachings, consider exploring kirtan practice directly—either through recordings or, ideally, through live sessions where the collective field of many voices singing together becomes palpable. The Kirtan Wallah Foundation offers a digital library of teachings, music, and workshops.

Read some of the books the teacher recommends through his library list—texts on Bhakti (devotional) practice, the nature of the guru-student relationship, and the lives of saints who exemplify losing themselves in love.

Most importantly: begin noticing where love is already present in your life, and in what moments you forget yourself—not through dissociation, but through genuine absorption in something or someone beyond your small self. That capacity to forget yourself is the seed of the practice. Meditation like Christ is not a foreign technology. It is the deepest thing you already know.

[41:03] Heat. Heat.

[41:18] I see this.

[41:25] Woo!

[41:47] Yeah. One night, one day, uh that old

[41:50] baba that I talked about who's 163,

[41:55] he asked us if we wanted to go to this

[41:57] uh some gathering with him.

[42:02] So we said, "Sure." So we all got on

[42:04] this car

[42:06] many hours.

[42:10] >> Is that

[42:12] >> maybe? Yes. And um

[42:16] we got to after it was late at night we

[42:18] got to this

[42:20] place and it was a big field

[42:23] and there were hundreds of dunies fires,

[42:27] sacred fires. There were thousands of

[42:29] sadus there

[42:31] and You know, I've been treating this

[42:34] guy like a nice little worldly poly nice

[42:36] little guy, you know,

[42:39] sat around in a beach chair with a

[42:40] schmata on his head, you know.

[42:45] So, we get there and the sadus

[42:48] recognized that this is the Baba's car

[42:51] and they all stood up and they started

[42:54] singing Harara Mahadev. Thousands of

[42:57] sadus. It was from outer space.

[43:03] It was unbelievable.

[43:05] It was so incredible.

[43:10] That particular chant, you know, the

[43:11] meaning of that chant is about the form

[43:14] of Shiva

[43:17] who resides as the lord of the universe

[43:21] on the banks of the Ganga in Kashi in

[43:24] Bernaris.

[43:26] And that's where many people will go

[43:29] there when they're getting close to

[43:32] death

[43:34] because it's believed that if you die

[43:36] there in Kashi, Shiva whispers the name

[43:39] of Rah in your ear as you go. So many

[43:44] pilgrims go there the same way they go

[43:46] to Bundavan for the same thing.

[43:51] It's a serious place.

[44:06] Sheba has many forms.

[44:11] This is one of them.

[44:17] I know

[44:20] Jesus on me.

[44:23] Tell him what you want.

[44:26] Jesus on me.

[44:30] Tell him what you want.

[44:33] Jesus on me.

[44:37] Tell him what you want. You can call.

[44:42] Tell him what you want.

[44:46] Let me hear

[44:48] you

[44:53] talk about Jesus.

[45:00] You know Heat. Heat. Heat.

[45:11] Heat. Heat.

[45:23] Heat.

[45:25] Heat.

[45:35] Heat. Heat.

[45:47] Yeah. Heat.

[45:58] Heat. Heat.

[46:10] Heat. Heat. Heat.

[46:20] Heat. Heat.

[46:31] Heat. Heat.

[46:42] Yeah. Heat.

[46:54] Heat. Heat.

[47:08] Well,

[47:12] heat

[47:15] well.

[47:38] Heat. Heat.

[47:48] Heat. Heat. Heat.

[47:58] Heat. Heat.

[48:11] Heat. Heat.

[48:24] Heat. Heat. Heat.

[48:34] Heat. Heat.

[48:52] Tell you

[49:04] what you

[49:08] want.

[49:34] Now, don't send me send me any emails,

[49:37] okay?

[49:38] Saying you don't like me singing that

[49:40] song. I get those email.

[49:44] So I write back. I said, I can't believe

[49:46] in this day and age there are still

[49:49] people who can't stand to see a Jewish

[49:51] kid that made good.

[50:04] >> So

[50:09] one day uh

[50:12] a new guy came to the temple

[50:16] for the first time to meet Maharaji

[50:19] and uh he didn't know anything about the

[50:22] way Maharaji was

[50:25] so

[50:30] Maharaj says to him why did you come

[50:31] what do you want so he thought he should

[50:34] give a spiritual answer which was a

[50:36] mistake

[50:39] he said well you could you teach me how

[50:41] to meditate?

[50:44] Maharaji said,

[50:46] just go away. Go in the back with the

[50:48] crazy people, the the westerners, go.

[50:52] And as the guy was walking away,

[50:53] Maharaji said to him, just meditate like

[50:56] Christ. Go on, get out of here.

[51:00] So the guy comes in the back and of

[51:02] course anybody who spent one second with

[51:05] Maharaji had to be debriefed.

[51:08] What did he say? And then what did he

[51:10] say? And what did you say? Then what did

[51:12] he say?

[51:15] So,

[51:21] so the guy tells us he said you know

[51:23] Maharaj told me to meditate like Christ.

[51:25] Ramdas he said meditate ra meditate like

[51:30] Christ.

[51:32] Jesus.

[51:42] But then, you know, we thought, well, if

[51:44] he said it, he must know, right? That

[51:47] would be nice, right? So, later on, he

[51:50] came in the back to hang out with us and

[51:52] uh Ramda said, "Baba, you said we should

[51:55] meditate like Christ." How did he

[51:57] meditate? Okay, now I got my book out. I

[52:01] was going to write it down and run away

[52:04] and do it right.

[52:07] So,

[52:10] it seemed like he was about to say

[52:11] something,

[52:14] but instead his eyes just closed

[52:22] and he sat in front of us completely

[52:26] still. We had never seen him sit still.

[52:29] He was throwing fruit to people, barking

[52:31] orders to the people around the temple,

[52:33] talking to 10 people at the same time.

[52:35] >> But all of a sudden, boom.

[52:40] I thought, "Oh, Jesus would kill him."

[52:44] He sat there for a while and it was

[52:49] such an extraordinary feeling. It was

[52:51] like the the earth stopped turning.

[52:56] There was no movement anywhere. There

[52:58] was absolute stillness

[53:02] and then two tears came down his cheek

[53:12] and he kind of shook himself. He opened

[53:14] his eyes and he said he lost himself in

[53:17] love.

[53:19] That's how he meditated. He lost himself

[53:22] in love.

[53:25] He never died. No one understands.

[53:29] He's one with all beings. He never died.

[53:33] He lost himself in love.

[53:38] Well, I was pretty disappointed.

[53:44] I was hoping for something I could do.

[53:48] You know, like some 10 billion syllable

[53:50] mantra you had to do standing on one toe

[53:52] on the ice for 10,000 years. something

[53:55] easy like that.

[53:58] How do you lose yourself in love? How

[54:01] does that happen?

[54:12] I went to India

[54:17] to see if that love was real

[54:22] and it is.

[54:25] It's real

[54:26] and it's available for anyone and

[54:29] everyone all the time.

[54:33] And it's what we want.

[55:17] Krishna

[55:22] Krishna

[55:26] Krishna Krishna

[55:28] How Yeah.

[55:35] Yeah. I'm

[56:04] Christa might Honey, high

[56:32] Krishna.

[56:51] I

[1:10:12] Mighty

[1:10:32] Krishna.

[1:10:35] Heat. Heat.

[1:10:45] Heat.

[1:10:54] Heat.

[1:11:04] Heat. Heat.

[1:11:25] Heat

[1:11:28] up

[1:13:02] Heat.

[1:13:11] Yeah. Heat.

[1:13:23] Heat.

[1:13:35] Heat.

[1:14:16] So

[1:14:19] uh

[1:14:21] this chant is from the David puja da

[1:14:24] puja

[1:14:27] and there's four lines that get repeated

[1:14:31] again for a change.

[1:14:36] First is

[1:14:50] And the idea here rupam is form and the

[1:14:55] idea we're addressing the goddess we're

[1:14:57] saying give us your form in other words

[1:14:59] make us one with you

[1:15:03] jam jam is victory success

[1:15:08] giant show. That's all the stuff you

[1:15:11] need. Televisions, cars, all that

[1:15:16] You know, in India, they ask, they don't

[1:15:19] they're not shy.

[1:15:22] They have no money, so it's got to come

[1:15:24] from somewhere.

[1:15:28] And then means essentially take away all

[1:15:31] the negativity in my life. Remove

[1:15:34] everything that's in my way.

[1:15:36] So when we come to that part, those of

[1:15:39] you that want to sing the Sanskrit, you

[1:15:42] can sing that or you can also sing this

[1:15:44] other language. I'm going to sing it.

[1:16:01] >> Wait a minute.

[1:16:03] I still have

[1:16:26] mongoli

[1:16:34] through the sha

[1:16:54] heart.

[1:17:07] almost

[1:17:17] the river

[1:17:30] should

[1:17:51] they

[1:17:52] go

[1:17:57] they

[1:18:01] s

[1:18:14] to show

[1:18:18] me

[1:18:28] to show

[1:18:33] they

[1:18:44] shy.

[1:18:56] to show

[1:19:00] you

[1:19:16] David put

[1:19:23] your without

[1:19:36] showing

[1:19:50] I show the

[1:19:54] sur

[1:20:15] Giant

[1:20:19] wore.

[1:20:26] Keep going.

[1:20:28] >> I want to know what love

[1:20:37] you show.

[1:20:42] I won't feel what love is.

[1:20:50] >> No, you can show.

[1:20:57] >> I want you.

[1:21:05] Won't you show me?

[1:21:12] Are you

[1:21:21] can show

[1:21:26] me

[1:21:39] to

[1:21:42] I am

[1:21:46] showing

[1:21:52] the English.

[1:22:10] I

[1:22:16] show

[1:22:19] you.

[1:22:30] Show

[1:22:35] you.

[1:22:52] I want to know.

[1:23:01] You show

[1:23:15] you can

[1:23:28] Don't you

[1:23:34] want to feel

[2:10:10] So

[2:10:12] I do.

[2:10:26] If we know anything at all about a path,

[2:10:31] if we know that there might be a way to

[2:10:33] live in this world in a good way

[2:10:38] with an open heart and without fear.

[2:10:43] It's only because of the great beings

[2:10:45] that have gone before us.

[2:10:50] Out of their love,

[2:10:52] out of their kindness,

[2:10:56] they left some footprints for us to

[2:10:57] follow.

[2:11:02] So in the same way that they wish for

[2:11:04] us,

[2:11:08] in the same way that they wish for us,

[2:11:12] we wish

[2:11:14] that all beings everywhere, all of us be

[2:11:17] safe,

[2:11:19] be happy,

[2:11:21] that all of us have good health and

[2:11:23] enough to eat.

[2:11:27] And may we all live in peace

[2:11:32] and that ease of heart

[2:11:36] at ease of heart

[2:11:40] with whatever comes to us in life.

[2:12:00] Shanty,

[2:12:04] shanty,

[2:12:08] shanty.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the teaching, meditating like Christ means losing yourself in love—not through technique or complex mantras, but through genuine absorption in the presence of the divine. It's about forgetting your small self and becoming one with something greater, which happens through sincere practice and the grace that responds to sincerity.
Har Har Mahadev addresses Shiva as the lord of the universe residing on the banks of the Ganga in Kashi (Benares). In India, this chant holds particular power because Kashi is believed to be a place of liberation—where Shiva is said to whisper the name of Ram in your ear at the moment of death.
Kirtan is call-and-response chanting of divine names and mantras. It is an active practice, not passive listening. The repetition, collective participation, and focus on sacred words create conditions for genuine spiritual feeling and transformation to emerge naturally.
In practices like Devi puja, you ask for what you genuinely need—form (union with the divine), material provision for security, and removal of obstacles. There is no shame in asking clearly and directly; what matters is sincerity, not pretending to be more advanced than you are.
The guru's role includes confusing you through apparent dismissal or paradox, then demonstrating through their own presence what you are being asked to understand. Authentic teaching sometimes works indirectly, revealing through silence or tears what words cannot convey.
Yes. The teacher emphasizes that Jesus, Krishna, Ram—all names of the divine—can be called upon by a sincere seeker. Genuine spirituality transcends sectarian boundaries; what matters is the sincerity of your love and longing, not which name you use.
