A Mayan Sanctuary hotel in a protected ecological park on Tulum's Caribbean coast
IKAL sits inside a protected ecological park on the Caribbean coast at Tulum, with jungle on one side and direct access to the sea on the other. The hotel describes itself as conceived as a sanctuary, a place to live in harmony with the spirit, and it says the ancestral wisdom of the land inspired the way it was built.
The architecture is the first thing a guest notices. Casa Alacran and the bungalows use a circular biomimetic design, built with bamboo and Chukum, a traditional Mayan wall finish the pages describe as smooth and cool. The rounded surfaces are meant to let energy flow freely. Bungalows gather around a central seawater pool, and the cabañas include ocean-front and treehouse suites with plunge pools, and jungle suites with private look-out towers.
The practice spaces carry the same intent. The Shala is an open-air hall that the pages call the daily heart of the sanctuary. The weekly yoga program draws teachers from Brazil, India, the US, Argentina and Mexico, and covers sunrise sadhana, Kundalini, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, pranayama and meditation. A Level 2 Kundalini Yoga teacher training was scheduled for April 2026. The Garchen Tara Stupa, which the site says is the second in the world, is offered as a place to practice love and compassion for the benefit of the community.
After dark, people gather at the Sacred Fire. Ceremonies run Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, including full and new moon, sound healing, cacao and kirtan, and a temazcal sweat lodge is part of the offering. Wednesday afternoons are given to workshops. On weekends a kids program for ages 4 to 12 runs in collaboration with the NGO LADLE. RestAura, a gathering of music, ceremony and yoga, began here and has a November 2026 edition at IKAL Tepoztlán.
