An independent all-ages music venue on Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, since 1986
SOMA was founded in 1986 as an all-ages dance club, in the heart of downtown San Diego. The pages describe it as world famous and independently owned, and the all-ages thread has held through every address since. In the 1990s it moved to Morena Blvd. Now, in what the venue calls its third incarnation, it stands at 3350 Sports Arena Blvd.
The concert history is long. The venue's own account names Eddie Vedder, Stone Temple Pilots, No Doubt, Radiohead, Green Day, Tool, Nine Inch Nails and Blink 182 among the artists who have played there, along with Dom Kennedy, Chance The Rapper and Billie Eilish. An extensive remodel in 2019, including the dressing rooms, set up what the venue counts as more than 33 years of concert-going history.
The room is built around sightlines. More than 20,000 square feet of floor space holds up to 2,300 people, the back of the room has been raised for a better view, and two raised VIP viewing areas sit above the crowd. Shows run in two configurations, the Mainstage and the smaller Sidestage. Most are general admission, standing room only, and many are all ages. Doors at the Mainstage typically open at 7pm.
The calendar leans toward rock, punk and hip-hop. Recent listings include Schoolboy Q, The Living Tombstone, EsDeeKid, and the Sex Pistols lineup of Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock with Frank Carter. Earlier pages list The Story So Far and Sun Room. Craft beer is poured at every event, and a soda bar in the main lobby serves soft drinks, water and snacks. Parking is free, and children under 8 need headphones or noise-reduction earplugs.
When the stage is dark, the space is also available for private events: holiday and birthday parties, fashion events, trade shows, and corporate or charity bookings, with private catering offered.
