John De Kadt's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

John de Kadt is not a teacher in the lecture-and-curriculum sense. He is a musician, poet, and storyteller whose teaching happens through performance. Understanding him means taking seriously that the form is the instruction: a story told slowly, with a drum under it, is meant to change the pace of the room before it changes anyone's mind.

The Shape of a Session

His central format is what he calls DrumStory: ancient myths from indigenous cultures and mystical traditions, told while he plays an array of percussive and melodic instruments from around the world. He has worked this way for more than 25 years, in festivals, fine arts theaters, churches, and retreat centers. Those settings differ a great deal, and the work has to hold up in all of them.

A typical evening is closer to ceremony than to a concert or a talk. The story is the spine, and the instruments act as breath, weather, and punctuation. There is no argument to follow and no framework to take notes on. Listeners are asked to settle into a pace and let the narrative do its work. With The Rememberers, his trio, the structure widens: original contemporary songs are woven among the myths, so the evening moves between old story and present-tense music.

Recurring Themes

The throughline in his own description is slowing the world down, "even if only for a moment," and returning to the tempo of nature. Remembrance runs through everything, including the name of his group. Story is presented as a vehicle for seeing ourselves more clearly, not as entertainment or heritage. Related themes follow: ritual as a practical technology for attention, myth as a mirror, and community as something assembled in shared time and sound. BlessFest, the music, healing, and sacred arts festival he founded in 2018, extends this from the stage to the gathering itself.

The Questions He Leaves With You

He tends to leave questions open rather than answer them, which is characteristic of myth. The ones his work seems built to raise are fairly plain. What happens when you stop hurrying? What are you being asked to remember, and what have you forgotten on purpose? Where in the old story do you recognize yourself, and is it a flattering place? These are inferred from his stated aims rather than from a published curriculum, and that is part of the point: the work offers no worksheet, only an experience to be sat with afterward.

The Aesthetic of Delivery

His voice is a spoken-word voice. He has a stated passion for the spoken word in all its forms, including poetry, song, rap, and story, so his delivery draws on rhythm and cadence more than on exposition. Silence matters because it is built into the premise: if the aim is to slow things down, pauses are structural, not decorative. Story and music carry most of the weight, and the sacred material comes through myth and mystical tradition rather than through doctrinal explanation. His albums, six in all and widely used for deep rest, dance, and inspiration, show the range of the sensibility, from quiet to kinetic. Anyone expecting stand-up polish or a sermon should adjust expectations. The register is closer to a fireside than a podium.

Who It Lands For

It lands for people who are already tired of speed and information and want to be addressed through image and rhythm. Listeners comfortable with ceremony, retreat culture, or the festival world of sacred arts will find a native language here. Those who come to myth for psychological recognition, rather than for answers, are well served. It also suits people who need a reset more than a lesson, which is probably why the recordings have found use in rest and dance settings.

Who May Bounce Off

People who want explicit instruction, a method with steps, or measurable takeaways may find the work diffuse. Listeners wary of ritual framing, or who hear "sacred" and "healing" language as vague, may keep their distance, and the mix of indigenous and mystical sources invites reasonable questions about context and authority that a general audience may bring with it. Those who dislike slowness will also struggle. The pace is the offering, and it can't be hurried for impatient listeners without defeating the purpose.

The Wider Tradition

De Kadt belongs to the lineage of oral storytellers and ritual performers, and to the contemporary world of sacred music and conscious-arts gatherings that grew around kirtan, chanting, and devotional performance. He is not a kirtan leader in the strict call-and-response sense, but he shares the premise that sound can change attention and that a gathered room can become a practice space. His closest relatives are the modern mythic storytellers and the musician-teachers of the retreat circuit, who teach through atmosphere and example rather than through system. As a producer of festivals, he also works as a convener, a role that is itself an old part of that tradition.

In sum, he is a serious practitioner of a quiet craft. The work asks for presence and gives back something more like a state than a set of ideas.
