About This Event

Description

Common Questions

FAQs

Nyung-né is a two-day Mahayana fasting and purification retreat centred on the practice of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the Buddha of compassion, in his thousand-armed, eleven-faced form. It is traditionally done to purify negative karma and to cultivate compassion. At Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa it is offered as an intensive retreat.
In the traditional Nyung-né format, the first day includes a single meal and the second day is a full fast with silence, followed by taking food again on the third morning. Participants should confirm the exact schedule and any adaptations with the Institute, since I can't verify how this particular retreat is arranged. If you have a medical condition or take regular medication, ask the organisers before registering.
This is an intensive practice retreat, so it suits people who already have some familiarity with Buddhist practice, prayer recitation and prostrations. Check with the Institute whether a prior empowerment or the Eight Mahayana Precepts are expected. It is probably not a good fit if you are looking for a relaxed introduction to meditation or a casual weekend away.
Nyung-né combines long sessions of recitation and visualisation with repeated prostrations, plus periods of silence and fasting. Expect it to be physically tiring, especially on the second day. It is not suited to anyone who cannot sustain fasting or the prostrations, though the Institute may suggest adaptations.
