Where to Start with Travis Eliot: A Beginner's Guide

Travis Eliot is a yoga teacher, meditation teacher, kirtan musician, certified Ayurveda practitioner, and author. He co-founded Inner Dimension and is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 instructor based in Los Angeles. His work spans several formats, so the way in matters. Note that there is no discography or book list to point you toward here. His work is best met through his classes, so that is where this guide sends you.

The Single Best Entry Point: A Holistic Yoga Flow Class

Start with a class in his signature style, Holistic Yoga Flow. It is the clearest expression of what he does: dynamic movement that treats the practice as more than exercise. His videos have reached students in more than 85 countries, so you can take a class from your living room, though if you live near Los Angeles you can practice with him in person.

Choose a Holistic Yoga Flow class over a workshop or retreat. Those are bigger commitments, and they make more sense once you know whether his teaching style suits you. A single flow class costs you one session and shows you his pacing, his language, and how he blends movement with inner focus.

The Next Three Places to Go

Chi Warrior Flow. This is his other signature class. If Holistic Yoga Flow felt like the right register, this is the natural second step, and comparing the two shows you the range of his teaching.

His meditation teaching. Meditation is where his story begins. His mother introduced him to it at age 9, and he spent hours with cassette tapes and books on spirituality. Moving from the flow classes to his meditation offerings shows you the foundation underneath the movement.

Kirtan. He is a kirtan musician, and chanting is central to his own story. His first class at Santa Monica Power Yoga, closing with a chant, felt to him like a homecoming. Hearing him in that mode explains a lot about the rest of his work.

After that, consider a workshop or retreat if you want depth and have the time and budget.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect a dynamic style. This is not a gentle, purely restorative approach, so plan on moving. Expect the teaching to connect the physical practice to meditation, breath, and the broader yogic tradition rather than treating poses as isolated shapes. Given his Ayurveda training and his kirtan background, you may also hear threads of those traditions. Come with a mat, some space, and a willingness to follow along without perfecting anything.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"It's just a workout." The classes move, but the intent runs deeper. If you treat it only as fitness, you will miss what makes the style distinct.

"I have to be flexible or experienced." His own entry was a first class that changed his direction. Showing up matters more than skill.

"I need to sample everything at once." His output is broad: flow, meditation, chanting, Ayurveda, workshops. Pick one format and stay with it for a few sessions before judging.

"Spiritual content means I must adopt a belief system." Chanting and meditation can be approached as practices to try, not commitments to accept.

When This Work Lands Hardest

His own story points to the answer: this work tends to resonate during transitions and low points. He describes a hard stretch in Hollywood that ended in a low point, then a single yoga class that turned his life. Later, near-death experiences in Kauai and during the 2004 tsunami in Thailand led him to dedicate his life to teaching. If you are in a period of burnout, career uncertainty, loss, or restlessness, and you want practices that address body and mind together, his work is likely to meet you there.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Take a Holistic Yoga Flow class. Afterward, note how you feel, without judging it.

Day 2: Rest from yoga. Try a short meditation of his, even a few minutes.

Day 3: Repeat Holistic Yoga Flow, paying attention to what feels more familiar.

Day 4: Take a Chi Warrior Flow class and compare it to the first.

Day 5: Meditate again, a little longer than on Day 2.

Day 6: Choose whichever class resonated most and repeat it. Listen to some kirtan afterward.

Day 7: Rest, then review. Which format did you look forward to? That is your direction. If it was the flow classes, look into a workshop. If it was meditation or chanting, go deeper there. If you felt a strong pull toward the whole approach, a retreat may be your next step.
