Hugh Byrne, PhD, is a teacher, trainer and author on mindfulness and compassion for spiritual and social transformation. He is a lead teacher at the Insight Meditation Community of Greater Washington (IMCW).
His path to meditation began with a passion for social justice. For more than twenty years he worked for human rights in Latin America and Africa and for U.S. policies that support equality and genuine development. He values that work, but also recalls the stress and sense of separation that came from an "us" and "them" approach and from being tightly tied to outcomes. Encountering Buddhist teachings, he came to see that how we work for change is essential to creating a more just, peaceful and sustainable world.
Hugh has more than thirty years of meditation and retreat practice and more than twenty years of teaching meditation, both Buddhist and secular. He has taught with IMCW and other groups, including Kripalu, Omega, Insight Meditation Society, and corporations, government agencies and non-profits. He is a graduate of a four-year retreat teacher training. In Washington, DC, he has helped organize community efforts that bring mindfulness into civic life, including a year of engaged dharma.
He is also drawn to how habits become unconscious and automatic, and how mindfulness can make them conscious so change becomes possible. He is the author of The Here-and-Now Habit (2016), which draws on Buddhist teachings and neuroscience, and Habit Swap: Mindfulness Skills to Change Habits for Good (2020). He often co-leads retreats and workshops with Rebecca Hines, using meditation, poetry and gentle movement.

Worth Knowing
Hugh Byrne is a meditation teacher and author with a distinctive path: he spent more than twenty years doing human rights advocacy in Latin America and Africa before fully committing to Buddhist practice and contemplative teaching. This background shapes everything—his work isn't about personal transcendence or escape, but about how meditation and mindfulness can fundamentally reshape how we engage with social change, habit patterns, and our relationships to stress and separation. With over thirty years of meditation practice and twenty years teaching, he serves as a lead teacher at the Insight Meditation Community of Greater Washington (IMCW) and has trained thousands at institutions including Kripalu, Omega, and the Insight Meditation Society. What draws people to his work is the integration: he doesn't separate the practice from the world, but shows how mindfulness builds capacity for both personal transformation and collective healing. His books on habit change, particularly The Here-and-Now Habit and Habit Swap, have introduced practitioners who might never enter a formal meditation retreat to the neuroscience and Buddhist philosophy behind why our automatic patterns persist—and how awareness itself becomes the lever for change.
